Just as with the first film, Ghosh wanted to shoot in India as he felt the film could not be produced in a studio in Mumbai, and that if it were to be shot abroad the location would have to be looked up. As Kahaani 2 shoots in village locations in Orissa, eastern India, he felt that everything could be easily shot in the film and that he could keep the budget lower.[20] Sujoy Ghosh describes Kahaani 2 as an epic crime story in two parts, while director of the film Prakash Batra describes it as a study of Indian life.[21]
On 28 September 2015, Sujoy Ghosh tweeted that he will shoot the film in two parts, with the first part having a lower budget. He later confirmed that the film would be shot in 2016 and the second part will be released in 2018, while some scenes will be shot in 2016.[27] In an interview with Sujoy Ghosh, director of the Kannada version of Kahaani, Prakash Batra, said that production of Bollywood version of Kahaani has got delayed as the Bengali version was shot much faster than the Hindi version.[28]
Some scenes of the film were shot in West Bengal before the film was postponed in April 2016. The shooting was postponed due to the main budgeted lead actor, Arjun Rampal, being busy in India and abroad, but a retake still went in May 2016.[23] While initial reports claimed that the film was to be remade in Hindi in 2015, Ghosh clarified that he was interested in remaking the Bengali film Kahaani in Kannada, and it was this version that was eventually filmed.[24] According to reports in October 2015, Kannada actor Nagare Gowda replaced Arjun Rampal in the lead role, and he was to be paid a further 4.5 million.[25][26] 7211a4ac4a
